Introduction

The Organising Committee invites all crystallographers to attend Crystal XX1, the Twenty First Meeting of the Society of Crystallographers in Australia. The conference will be held at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel Conference Centre, Thredbo Alpine Village, NSW, from the evening of Tuesday 1st February 2000 to the evening (5.30p.m) of Friday 4th February 2000.

In the week following the SCA meeting (6th-12th February) the 11th Royal Australian Chemical Institute Convention and the 16th Australian Conference on Electron Microscopy are to be held in Canberra. In addition the 25th Annual Conference on Protein Structure and Function will be held in Lorne, Victoria. These conferences may be of interest to some Crystal XXI participants.

The Venue

The Thredbo Alpine Hotel Conference Centre is ideally located in the heart of the Kosciusko National Park in the Snowy Mountains of southern New South Wales and is nestled beneath Mt Kosciusko, Australia's highest mountain (2228m).

Conference facilities
In summer Thredbo blends a unique mountain environment with cultural events and activities to suit all ages. Activities include: walks in Australia's High Country, fly fishing, mountain biking, white water rafting, abseiling, bobsledding, bird watching, chairlift rides, tennis, golf, work-outs in the AIS Thredbo Alpine Training Centre, and swimming.
(for further information visit the Thredbo Web-site; http://thredbo.com.au).

Scientific Program

The Conference Lecture will be presented by the 1987 Fellow, Professor Douglas L. Dorset, Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, Buffalo. (Electron Microscopy, Diffaction and Crystallography).

In addition the following invited speakers will give Keynote Lectures in different areas of crystallography and these will form the focus for the different scientific sessions that are planned. The majority of talks in each session will be drawn from submitted abstracts and we encourage, though not exclusively, contributions in these and related areas of crystallography. In addition it is planned to have a session devoted to Instrumental Developments.

We particularly welcome both oral and poster presentations from students.

Ian Grey (Inorganic/Mineral Structures).
CSIRO Div. Minerals, Bayview Ave, CLAYTON 3168

Colin Raston (Small Molecule Crystallography)
Dept. Chemistry, Monash University, Wellington Road, CLAYTON, 3168

Bill David (Structure Solution by Powder Diffraction)
ISIS - Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Didcot , Oxon, UK

Peter Colman (Protein/Biological Crystallography)
Biomedical Research Institute, Royal Parade, Parkville, Victoria 3052

Stephen Hyde (Soft-Matter Science/SAS)
Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, ANU, Canberra, ACT 0200

Accommodation

Accommodation has been reserved in the Thredbo Alpine Hotel and the Thredbo Alpine Apartments, which should be able to cater for the majority of attendees. Both of these are directly adjacent to the Conference centre, but there is a large range of other accommodation available in the village within easy walking distance. We hope that most people will choose one of the two options provided on the registration form, as this will keep the cost of the hire of the Conference Facilities to a minimum. The Alpine Apartments are fully equipped self-catering units. The units are 3 bedroom units in which 5 people can be accommodated in separate beds. Please indicate on the registration form if you have a preference for with whom you wish to share. There is a small Supermarket nearby.

Transport

Thredbo is about 2.5 hours drive from Canberra. Bus transport from Canberra on the afternoon of 1st Feb will be provided and similarly return after the conference on the morning of Saturday 5th Feb. Please tick the appropriate box on the registration form so that numbers requiring this transport can be accurately estimated. Note that the journey to Thredbo requires entry into the Kosciusko National Park. While travel by bus requires a single entry payment of $6 for each person, private cars require a permit ($14) for each day in the park (annual pass $60).

If a sufficient number of people plan to go straight from Thredbo to the Lorne Protein meeting, it may be possible to organise a coach. Please tick the box on the registration form if you would be interested in this travel option.

Registration

The Registration form, Accompanying Person form, Payment Form and a printable copy of this Call for Abstracts document may be downloaded using the links below. Please complete the forms and forward with any abstracts to the Conference Office.  Note, please also fill in an Accompanying Persons form for EACH accompanying person. The deadline for submission is the 5th November, 1995.  Note that this date has been set with a rather longer lead-time to the conference than usual, because of the intervening Christmas/New Year period.

Abstracts

Abstracts should be submitted as a single A4 page using a common font at least 12pt in size. Margins (top, bottom, left and right) of 3 cm should be used. The first line should contain the title of the paper, and the second line the names of the authors with the presenting authorís name underlined, followed by the affiliations. The complete book of abstracts will allot one A4 page per abstract.

Abstracts should be submitted in electronic form to the Conference Office (as an attached document to an email, or on floppy disc) (crystal21@rsc.anu.edu.au). Most common data formats can be handled but in case of difficulties we may ask for an abstract to be resubmitted in a different format.

Assistance for Student Attendees

Student members of SCA from both Australia and New Zealand are advised that they are eligible to apply for an E.N. (Ted) Maslen 1987 Scholarship to help support their attendance at Crystal XXI. To qualify, the students need to be members of the SCA (they can apply for membership at the time of application - form at the SCA website). In addition they are required to give an oral or poster presentation at the conference.

Method of Application

Postgraduate students applying for a 1987 Scholarship should forward to the Secretary of SCA, Dr. Brendan Kennedy, School of Chemistry, University of Sydney, NSW 2006, the following:
Application deadline for Scholarships is 7thDecember 1999.
