ACHIEVEMENTS:
Algorithms: DOLLS tensor method for shear flow; SLLOD
algorithm which is exact for shear flow; Evans' method for heat flow; colour
conductivity for self diffusion; Gaussian ergostat and barostats; constraint
methods for oligomers; quaternion method for rigid body molecules;
configurational thermostatting methods and method of Planes for efficiently
calculating interfacial properties.
Exact Statistical Mechanical Expressions: Transient Time
Correlation function and Kawasaki expressions for thermostatted nonlinear
response theory; exact expressions for specific heats and compressibilities of
nonequilibrium steady states; exact Einstein expressions for diffusion tensor
in planar Couette flow; first principles derivation of the Langevin equation
for shear flow in suspensions; proof (with Searles) of the Transient
Fluctuation Theorem (TFT); experimental verification of the TFT using optical
tweezers. Exact statistical mechanical treatment of glasses and time
independent nondissipative nonequilibrium systems.
Chaos and Statistical Mechanics: First exact expression
relating chaotic measures to transport coefficients, namely the Conjugate
Pairing Rule; first statement of the Steady State Fluctuation Theorem;
derivation of an exact expression for linear transport coefficients in terms of
the Kaplan-Yorke dimension of the steady state attractor; proof of the
Transient Fluctuation Theorem for various ensembles; proof of Le Chatelier's
Principle and the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
Experiments
(with A. Prof. Edie Sevick's polymers and soft condensed matter group), first
experimental confirmation of Fluctuation Theorems.
