ANU PhD Scholarships in Organic and Biological Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Available now!

Provide living allowance of A$19,616 per annum (tax free), plus grant for travel to Canberra. Tenable for three years of full-time study. Australians, New Zealanders and all overseas nationals may apply. Australian and New Zealand students may apply for these scholarships at any time of year. Overseas students must apply by 31 August each year.

Alan Sargeson Merit Supplementary Scholarships

Supplementary scholarships for PhD Scholarship holders in the Research School of Chemistry and the Department of Chemistry at the ANU. They provide for payment of an extra A$5000 - A$8000 per annum.

Australian Postgraduate Awards

Provide the same living allowance and similar conditions to ANU PhD Scholarships, but are funded by the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia. Only available to Australian citizens and permanent residents.
The closing date is 31 October each year.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships

Cover the A$19,616 per annum full tuition fee payable by overseas students. A $1,000 relocation incentive is also paid to all students moving from an interstate or New Zealand university to the ACT. An ANU PhD Scholarship is also required to cover living expenses and travel costs.
The closing date is 31 August each year.

ANU MPhil Degree Scholarships

Provide living allowance of A$19,616 per annum (tax free), plus grant for travel to Canberra. Scholarships are offered initially for one year but may, subject to satisfactory progress and in accordance with the prescription of the particular study program concerned, be extended for up to a total of two years.
Applications close on 31 October each year.

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS)

The Australian Government provides a limited number of scholarships for students from selected developing countries to study in Australia. The scheme is administered by AusAID.

 



ANU PhD Scholarships in Organic and Biological Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical and Theoretical Chemistry

Eligibility

Applications are invited for PhD Research Scholarships in the fields of Biological Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Theoretical Chemistry.

Applicants should be of a high scholastic calibre and should have a capacity for research. They should hold, or expect to hold, a degree of bachelor with at least upper second class honours, or a degree of master, from a recognised university. In special cases, applicants with other qualifications and/or research experience may be considered.

Stipend

Subject to satisfactory progress, a scholarship is tenable for the period of the PhD course, normally three years, and provides a stipend of A$19,616 per annum (tax free).  In addition, fares and a grant towards removal expenses are provided.

To complement the ANU PhD Scholarship, School merit-based supplementary scholarships up to $8,000 per annum (tax free) are also available (see Alan Sargeson Merit-based scholarships).  A $1,000 relocation incentive is also paid to all students moving from an interstate or New Zealand university to the ACT.   For the duration of the scholarship the students will receive support to attend national conferences and will be strongly encouraged and supported to attend one international conference.

New Zealand students are not required to pay full tuition fees as is required of other overseas students. They are, like Australians, included in the Australian Government’s Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS). However, they are required to pay Overseas Student Health Cover as they are not eligible for coverage under Medicare. Scholars are eligible for assistance with University accommodation. Students recruited in Australia are eligible for an establishment allowance.

Overseas students are eligible to apply for these scholarship provided that they have separate tuition fee funding.  Return airfares to Canberra and a grant for the reimbursement of some removal expenses are normally paid to scholars who are recruited from overseas. If the overseas scholar is married before taking up a scholarship, travel and some removal costs may be paid for the spouse and dependent children. 

Closing date for applications

Australians and New Zealanders may apply at any time throughout the year. Australian applicants who also wish to be considered for an Australian Postgraduate Award must lodge their applications by 31 October each year.

The closing date for overseas applicants is 31 August each year.

Alan Sargeson Merit Supplementary Scholarships

Eligibility

These merit-based awards are open to Australians and New Zealanders (or permanent residents of Australia) who hold, or expect soon to hold, a first class honours degree and who wish to pursue research in any of the areas of chemistry offered by the Research School of Chemistry and the Department of Chemistry.

Stipend

They provide for payment of a supplementary scholarship of $5,000 - $8,000 per annum (tax exempt) to outstanding holders of an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or (in the case of New Zealanders) an ANU PhD Scholarship, or some other living allowance scholarship, for the duration of that scholarship. This brings the total possible scholarship stipend to $27,616 per annum tax free.

Application Form

The ANU has the one application form for admission to the PhD degree course and for Scholarships. Under item 15 on the form, you tick the appropriate box for an APA or an ANU PhD scholarship, and under "other" put Alan Sargeson Merit Scholarship.

Australian Postgraduate Awards

Eligibility

The Commonwealth Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs makes available each year awards for full-time study leading to a higher degree. These awards are available to Australian citizens and to people from overseas who have permanent residence status in Australia, provided they have been resident in Australia for 12 months prior to the closing date for applications. They are offered at The Australian National University only to applicants intending to undertake courses leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Stipend

The awards provide a basic stipend of A$19,616 per annum (tax free). Students recruited in Australia are eligible for an establishment allowance.

Closing date for applications

The closing date is 31 October each year.

The selection committee normally meets in mid-December to decide first offers of awards, but selection often continues into the following January or February.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships

Eligibility

These scholarships are available for PhD and Master degrees by research and cover the full tuition fee for overseas students. Graduates from all countries except Australia and New Zealand are eligible.
Please note that overseas students need two scholarships to support their study for a PhD degree - an ANU PhD Scholarship which provides the living allowance and an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship which provides for the compulsory tuition fees.

Aspiring students should pay particular attention to Information for International Students which includes details on Conditions of Stay, English Language Competence, Health Insurance, etc.

Stipend

The full fee for a laboratory-based PhD or MPhil degree course is currently A$19,616 per annum.

ANU MPhil Degree Scholarships

Eligibility

Australian National University Master degree by research scholarships are available for full-time study in the graduate program of chemistry. Applicants must be of a high scholastic calibre; they should hold, or expect to hold, a bachelor degree with at least upper second class honours or equivalent from a recognised university, and have shown a capacity for research. In special cases, applicants with other qualifications and research or other experience of a high order may be considered.

Scholarships are offered initially for one year but may, subject to satisfactory progress and in accordance with the prescription of the particular study program concerned, be extended for up to a total of two years. Subject to the agreement of the convenor of the graduate program, scholarships should be taken up as early as possible in the academic year for which the offer is made.

Stipend

A scholarship provides a basic living allowance (or stipend) of A$19,616 per annum (tax free). A married scholar from overseas may be eligible for an additional allowance for dependent children. Scholars from interstate are eligible for assistance with University accommodation and are eligible for an establishment allowance.

Applications close on 31 October each year.

Eligibility and selection criteria vary from country to country. Applicants must write for application forms and information to the Australian diplomatic mission or the Australian Education Centre in their home country.
