Why study chemistry? | Why choose RSC? | ANU - a great location

Don’t start your PhD without exploring how you could take advantage of studying at ANU, Australia’s research centre of excellence for chemistry.

Why study chemistry?

Chemistry forms the basis for technological advances in all areas of life, from developing new drugs, to improving food production, building new materials like plastics, to understanding the basic building blocks of life. The study of matter, right down to the level of the atom, underpins all other sciences, from astronomy to zoology.

A sound basis in chemistry opens up a wealth of opportunities. Chemistry graduates are highly sought after for a range of careers, not only in research institutions, but also in industry, commerce, management, teaching, information technology and medicine.

Why choose RSC?

At the Research School of Chemistry we view students as one of our most important resources. We provide the highest quality training and education for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in a stimulating research environment.

As a student at the RSC you will work alongside internationally–renowned researchers and have access to world-class equipment and facilities. Our research covers biological chemistry through to physical and theoretical chemistry, offering you a wide choice of research projects.

Students benefit from close interaction with their supervisors and have access to all of the resources and expertise of the RSC. Students are also given opportunities to travel to national conferences.

RSC graduates often travel the world on postdoctoral fellowships, gaining international experience to enhance the training they received at the RSC. There is not a chemistry department at any Australian university that does not have someone who was either a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow at the RSC.

ANU - a great location

The ANU campus is on a 145-hectare site in Australia’s national capital, Canberra. It is positioned conveniently between Canberra’s city centre, Lake Burley Griffin and Black Mountain Nature Reserve. The appealingly landscaped campus attracts a range of native birds and wildlife and provides a pleasant environment.

Canberra is an attractive inland city located northeast of the Snowy Mountains in southern New South Wales. It is a two hour drive to the south coast beaches in summer and the New South Wales snowfields in winter. One half of the Australian Capital Territory is nature reserve or national park, presenting superb opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, bush walking, cross-country skiing and mountain biking.

The national capital has a fine range of museums, galleries, theatres and restaurants. The city’s 300,000 residents also enjoy superb sporting facilities. Indeed Canberra hosts the Australian Institute of Sport. Canberra's size makes it a very attractive place to live without the problems that detract from many of the world's larger cities.
