Vol 36 :  Issue No. 4

Editors -- Marilyn Holloway and Sue Riches

In this issue we have included publications by staff for 2005 to date.  It was felt that the inclusion of staff publications, in future on a fortnightly basis, would be of interested to other colleagues. It will also highlight the work of our postdoctoral fellows and PhD scholars which is usually only captured in our Annual Report and which for many of them appears after their departure.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS

AWARDS

Mr Kevin Cooper has just completed and been awarded his ANU Diploma in Project Management.  Congratulations, Kevin.

Congratulations to the following completing PhD scholar:

Ms Elizabeth Barrett(supervisor Dr Sherburn) was admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy on 8 April 2005.  The title of Elizabeth's thesis was:  The Synthesis and Applications of Functionalised Cavitands.

Congratulations also go to:

Dr Steffen Gross, currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Synthesis and Mechanism Group, who has been appointed Head of Laboratory at BASF in Ludwigshafen, Germany.  Steffen will assume this position in early September.

Item 1

Professor Martin Bennett found the following article in the Public Informant section of The Canberra Times on Tuesday 19 April.

Flogging a dead horse

We pass on without comment the text of an e-mail currently doing the rounds of government agencies:

The tribal wisdom of the Dakota Indians, passed down from generation to generation says that when you discover you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount.  In the Public Service, however, a whole range of far more advanced strategies are often employed, such as:

Item 2

How this particular advertisement for grants got through the scientific screening of the Academic Secretary's SPIN search engine for grants and awards is a mystery, but she was concerned that an

opportunity to obtain external funding not be missed by any of the School staff who give talks to secondary schools or colleges.

MEMORY LANE

A memorandum from a Head of Department to his staff (source not disclosed), dated 1990

"I am somewhat upset and dismayed to see how little many of you are working in the laboratories.  Also, the sloppy, filthy conditions of the laboratories coupled with general lack of effort causes me to inform you that I will no longer sit idly by while you have 100% attendance at parties and 10% attendance in the lab.

The amount of science I have heard from many of you over the past week or so is dismal in quantity and quality.  Furthermore, an attitude seems to prevail that is very upsetting to me.  The recent departure of two members of this group - without proper completion of reports, theses, etc., has angered me considerably.  I assure you both of these individuals will suffer in the future and I tell you this because I can't help but feel others will do the same.  The total disregard for my support in salaries, supplies, and placement in positions will no longer be a given to be taken for granted.  Frankly, I'm tired of being the "fall guy" for your selfish little lives.

Anyone in this group that doesn't pull his (or her) own weight, produce at the maximum level, and show consistent signs of professionalism, will be seeking alternative means of employment.  Do not take this threat lightly.

Finally, I'm sorry to have to send this memo, because there are a few true professionals in the group.  However, the part-time, fun-loving occasional researcher is being targeted and will no longer be tolerated."

Perhaps a short ANU management and leadership course may have helped solve his problems?
